Here we go again.  On April 18th & 19th we'll fly legs three and four of the Thermal Safari route.  The base of operations will be in Williams California.  On Saturday we'll launch south/west of Orland and fly 43 miles south to Williams.  This leg runs on the west side of I-5 along straight roads through fat agriculture land.  On Sunday Sunday April 19th we'll launch from the hunting preserve we used last year west of  I-5 and complete the 29 miles from Dunnigan to the little town of Yolo, just north of Woodland.  This final leg follows winding County roads through rolling hills.  Depending on prevailing winds we may fly the course backwards.  Initial launching will probably start around 10:30 AM each day.

The hallmark of Thermal Safari is that it is not a contest.  There are no trophies, no entry fees, only bragging rights.  Thermal Safari 2009 is a cooperative team effort.  Through radio communication, teams assist each other finding lift along the route.  A four man team, including a navigator is suggested and after all, the more the merrier.  Forced landings along the route are inevitable and expected.  Winches and bungees will be used to get teams airborne again.  Since Williams is only an hour from Sacramento a morning commute is doable.  The way this event is set up, even open class ships will be able to complete the route and join the fun.  So don’t let the lack of a Cross Country ship prevent you from participating in this adventure.

GPS Routes

These routes are in "Garmin MapSource" format.  Most likely they're only compatible with Garmin products with Garmin mapping software.  Printed copies will be available in the pilot's package prior to the event. This year we'll  try to make things a little easier for the navigators and drivers.  We'll provide laminated maps and route narratives.  That should help reduce the vortex of loose sheets of paper whirling around the truck cabs as we roll down those country roads.
